This well-rounded expedition offers you a rare look into the Mayan culture, by visiting the ancient cities of this glorious prehispanic civilization and authentic communities where you can meet families who value their cultural legacy. Wonder at the imposing archaeological site at Tulum, from which you will have an amazing view of the Caribbean Sea. Visit the archaeological site of Cobá and discover the tallest temple in the entire region. Delve into nature and get to know an authentic Mayan community that holds the secrets of its ancestors. Dive into the crystal-clear waters of an ancient cenote a delight in the flavors of a traditional meal. Take your memories home with you in the form of photos of your activities, taken by photographers from the Mayan communities themselves!

Itinerary (Full-day tour)

  • 6:30-8:00 a.m. Pick-up at the different hotels of the Rivera Maya and Cancun based on their locations.
  • 9:00-10:00 a.m. Approximate arrival at the archaeological site or Mayan community (depending on the day’s logistics)
  • Tulum (45-minute guided visit and 45 minutes of free time at the archaeological site).
  • Visit Tulum, the only Mayan city located by the sea.
  • Cobá: (45-minute guided visit and 1 hour and 15 minutes of free time at the archaeological site)

Visit the principal temples of this archaeological site. Walk along ancient paths (known as “Sac be” in Mayan) that lead you to the great temple of Nohoch Mul. The highest in the region, and from whose summit you will enjoy a unique panoramic view of the jungle. Inside the site, you can rent bicycles or tricycles to make the trek easier at an additional cost.

Mayan Community (3 hours)

  • The Community of Tres Reyes: understand how this village has evolved with the arrival of ecotourism, observe its lifestyle and socioeconomic development.
  • Casa Maya: marvel as you get to visit a traditional Mayan house.
  • Mayan Ceremony: delve into the marvels of nature and participate in an authentic blessing ceremony with the aromas of copal incense, performed by a Mayan shaman form the community.
  • Cenote Swim: refresh yourself in the crystal-clear waters of the imposing Chimuch Cenote, which features very easy access.
  • Hanging Bridge: conquer your fears when you cross the imposing Cenote de la Vida (Cenote of Life) on an astonishing hanging bridge.
  • Traditional Meal: savor the flavors of a delicious traditional regional meal, including “chayitas” and fresh flavored water drinks in different flavors.

Recommendations

Bring comfortable shoes, bathing suit, light clothing, rash guard shirts, a change of clothing, money in cash or credit card for purchase of souvenirs and photos. The use of sunblock is not permitted, even for those identified as being biodegradable.

This expedition could represent overexertion for persons with disabilities and/or future mothers. Children may enjoy the expedition if they are aged 6 and over. Persons under the influence of alcohol or toxic substances are prohibited from participating. For safety, hands must remain free at all times, and as such we do not allow the use of photographic cameras (including mobile devices like cellular phones and tablets) aboard the boats, unless they are “Action Cam”-style (Go Pro) cameras, provided they are affixed during the whole excursion to a chest or head mount.
